Thread: Gas Gauge

    With the sender wires completely disconnected but installed in the tank, one of the two connections at the sender should show a short to ground (zero ohms) and the other should have some resistance to ground (either empty or full depending on the type).

    Test this and let me know.

    What happens to the gauge when the sender wire is disconnected at the sender and the ignition is turned on?

    Will do. I believe that the sender is 240 ohms empty and 33 ohms full.

    One problem I had with my sender (the same one you have from NAPA) is that a week after installing it, the bottom portion of it came loose and dropped to the bottom of the tank and shorted to ground. This gave a full reading.

    I pulled it and replaced the kind of cheap looking top plastic mount between the mounting surface and stem, which the mounting bolt head had pulled through with a better fiber spacer and washer from the hardware store. The bolt that holds the sender together is also the same one that the wire attaches to on top of the sender. When you tighten the nut, it pulled the bolt through. That was the only problem I had with it. It works perfectly now.

    I really dont want to drop the tank again but that is the direction this is heading.

    I'm having the exact same problem. The Napa part was a cheapo deluxe that I broke while installing. I then cut the top of the tank and welded in a newer pickup unit with the cam lock to allow easier access to the pickup screen, etc. The problem in my case is I grounded too much stuff in ignorance. Like you, I don't want to pull the tank again to fix it.

    I used the same Napa universal in tank sending unit with an Isspro gas gauge. Everything works fine and the gauge even seems to read fairly accurate. I can't believe I did something electrical the right way.
