I’m still not 100% sure if I have a SM420 or SM465 tranny but yes its some pretty serious gearing but it will be needed to turn these super heavy meats with a smaller engine.

    7.05 (SM420) or 6.58 (SM465) x 1.96 (NP203) x 1.96 (NP205) x 7.56 (404 Axle) = 204.75:1 or 191:1 crawl ratio.

SM465 has reverse to the right and down, SM420 is left and down. Larry

The 420 takes the small hole bell housing while the 465 is almost always the big hole bell housing.

I will have to go outside and look, but I think the 420 only has a pto port on the drivers side while the 465 has them on both sides.
Remember if you didn't build it you can't call it yours.

Here is some fairly useless knowledge I have memorized, big hole=5.125" and small hole=4.686". Advance Adaptors and Novak have pretty good info on Chevy trans and how to ID them.

If you look back to the picture I posted on Feb 6th you can see the side of the tranny. It looks like it has those PTO ports on both sides, the picture is from the passenger side which leads me to believe its a SM465. Also if I recall from the last time I was in the truck reverse is down and to the right. Mystery solved, thanks guys.

Classic delays in posting but that’s why I’m trying to post about it so I keep working on it. I've got more written up about the jeep/build and I'll copy/paste in here shortly. Unfortunately I lost my new digital camera on some drunken bachelor party weekend, probably better for the guys wife that happened anyway. So going forward I’ll have limited picture but eventually I’ll probably get a new camera or borrow someone’s. My iphone is 3.5 years old and the pictures are terrible so I won’t post any of that crap.

Tazjeeper to your Up and Running question – Yes, kinda. This truck is UP… real high in the air with the rear axle welded to the frame and the motor RUNS….out of a coke bottle of gasoline though the drivetrain that is driveshaft-less so it just a tall noise/smoke machine now. It’s a roller but it doesn't steer.

Probably not a ton of work will be going on in the next month as I get my green truck ready for 2 upcoming trips but I have a bunch of 3D solid modeling work I’ve been doing in a class I decided to take at the community college. I’m working on the rear 4 link suspension design in particular for the mog axles.
