Diesel Power M715 Article

Just purchased the March edition of Diesel Power and found a sweet Mod. I've attached a few pics just to get you guys to buy a copy cause they don't have the article on the web site.

Looks a little like what Hammer was doing in 2004 to his mod.

Good reason to bob the bed!!!

Not much stock but still a great machine! Has UniMog axles w/6.50:1 gears, 1610 drive shafts, 3 winches, 44" tires wrap 20" wheels, 5.9 cummins, gm4L80E trany desguised with TH400 parts, Ford SD NV271 T-case

i,am planning on doing my bobber simmilar only with twin front rocks and a 4 bt cummins, th400 turbo, np203 & np205 doubler, twin winches, hard & soft tops. it wont be pretty but it will be a offroad monster

Hello,

This is my Truck, and it has an radiator also in the front.
The engine is moved far back for better weight distributon, so I got enugh room in the front. The rear radiator keeps the engine happy when the front one is full with mud. It also has coils springs, steering is from an Unimog. The truck is never finished, now I am putting in an better hydro winch.

The gearing is perfect (on the street in my opinion), but the low range in the NV 271 is a little low for off road. I use and abuse my truck:D .

I understand the reason for bobbing, but I just can't deal with it asthetically. For me it just so ruins the look of the truck that nothing else matters. Still, impressive mechanicals.

Btw, the Michelins where 46" and they suck Off Road. I also tried the XMLs and they also suck Off Road, but the Michelins are good street tires. Now I am Running 44" 60mph Street Legal Ag Tires (first pic), and I love them.

Its funny! I personaly never liked the stock rear overhang, everybody got an differnt taste. Also when you look at the first pic I modifyed the bed behind the tool box. I hate the cap that is there in stock form.

I think my eyes are going bad. Is there a bar running across the side of the driver door in pic#1? Looks like it terminates just rear of the door handle.

Also, the rear legs of the roll bar appear as though the driver side ends inside the bed and the passenger side outside the bed. Neither looks like they terminate on top of the bed rails.

Also, what did you mean by modifying the bed "cap" behind the tool box?

Where did you find the DOT AG's?? I've tried to do a search and find the ones you have, but no luck.

Your eyes are good! after I destroyed several doors, I have an bar on the side (swings open). both rear legs end on the top of the bed. the bed corners are 3/8 thick. I wanted to write gap! behind the toolbox is the side of the bed higher, so you can look between the frame and bed. now the side of the bed end at the bottom of the toolbox.

The Michelin tires are very high quality, but no traction. Even with zero air in them you got no traction.

In Europe you can get lots of street legal AG (radial and bias) tires with an speed rating of 55mph.
Michelin, BKT, Alliance etc.

I still have a set of your 300M M37 axles, for sale BTW. I sold the fronts, not building up M37 axles anymore.

Whatever happened with the T-locker?

Did you hear that a fellow recently got a run of ARBs made for the Chrysler 9-5/8?

Hello Ken,

I heard about the Air Locker! Nobody realy showed up with an order for the lockers (M37), so I wasent doing anything. Little later I sold the whole locker buisness, someone paid me good money for it..
So when you have the axle parts for sale, what are you working on now?

I'm working on this without making easily reversible changes. It's an unusual truck, a 1960 IHC B140. Less than 1500 made in 2 years of production and this is the only one I've seen thus far that came with a regular pickup bed from the factory(gotta love having the lineset ticket). Most were outfitted as fire/utility trucks.

Curb weight is 8000 lb, gross is 11,000. At 11K, it's the lowest rated 140, which had gross as high as 17K.

With IH nomenclature, it's a 5/4 ton class(110,120,130, etc)

I just went out and took this picture, figure it was time to post a new pic of it, though a load destined for the dump is under the tarp.

I love that truck. Does it have a v-8 in it now? That paint really faded, was it Zero rust? How do you like the big NDT tires?

Yes, I mounted a 345 where the BD264 was. I picked up the 345 with a T18/D20 combo and a new clutch for $100. I spent that on just one piston for the BD264 which is in need of full rebuild. I used a Loadstar front cradle mount and a simple homemade piece to use the stock front mount location on the front crossmember, the bell mounts are in the original location, running the stock T98 so intermediate shaft is stock too.

Yes, that is Zero Rust. 75% green/25% black mix, sprayed on. It oxidized within 2 years. I like it and would use it again. I like the 'aged' look of it. I put ZR black on the chassis too. Just a power wash and spray away, not a resto in any way(I'll leave that to a future owner).

As to the NDT, well I really liked the price(mil surplus). I spent as much on new tubes and flaps as I did on the tires. I don't like the performance but I can't let loose the funds for a proper set of tires, atleast for now.

I had some Gama Goat tires on my Power Wagon, the only thing that could have had less traction was a set of drag slicks or bare rims with no tires. I sketched out a sort of directional tractor-tire sort of tread on the NDTs, and set out to cut it into them. I used a hacksaw, a utility knife and an angle grinder. After working for about 20 minutes, I removed one small piece. I tried a chain saw, worked like a charm, really, really well. So well in fact, I gave up the whole project, sold the tires, and replaced them with 38x13x16 Swampers. AWESOME. Anyway, my point is, I think cutting down a set of NDTs so they actually had traction would be easy and effective and a chainsaw would do it. I will try it on some future project. Sorry to ramble.

PS Surplus Michelins in 20" sizes can sometimes be had for cheap, if you luck out. THat would look cool.

They require too wide a rim. The wheels I have are 7" and finding any wider with this lug pattern(5 on 8) isn't going to happen so they'd have to be modified, which I have considered. Perhaps if I keep the truck long term...
