Thread: Governor

    Default Governor

I recently read a post that stated "during production a governor was added that necessitated a raised carb, and a air filter mounted to the hood". My 68 M715 has the hood mounted air filter. Does this mean that my truck has a gov, If it does, what is my top speed, and how hard would it be to remove it?.

Most likely you have a governor. Take a look below the carb. There should be two things between it and the intake manifold, a spacer that's about 1 1/2 inches wide and the governer, which is taller (maybe 2-3 inches). If you want everything to fit correctly as it is now, you can take it all apart and cut the innards out of the governor and put it all back. Or, you can take the governor out completely and keep your existing air cleaner or replace it with the carb-mounted one.

The governor is supposed to cap the speed at 60 mph, but I've never come close to 60 mph in mine, so I have never experienced it kicking in.

Thanks for the info. I probably just leave it. I seriously doubt I'll get close to 60mph either. I was just curious about top speed.

It doesn't cut your top speed, it limits the rpm of the engine. Which will cut your top speed as the tall gearing winds it out.

    It works on vacuum.
