Frame Color

No paint was showing after the blasting. Before that, it was undercoat on everything. What color was the stock frame, axels and tie rods, etc.? I was thinking black but not sure.

Black, but I'm not as much of an authority on these trucks as many other members. My stock truck appears to be unaltered, and it's black on all chassis areas and components.

Mine was OD and there were signs of black there too.

It looked as if it was originally painted black, then oversprayed with OD. Not sure if that was done from the factory or later, but it did appear as though my truck only had the one coat of factory OD and then the Forestry Service color.

The trucks I ever saw w/ any paint left were black, engine and driveline too, I believe the exposed axle/wheel hubs were green though. I suspect some parts may not have been painted at all, small things like maybe the steering column or drag links, brake drums, certian hardware,but impossible to know for sure w/o something like the blueprints with the details of factory assembly. It would be your pick, black or green.

I see no signs of OD anywhere underneath. I'll do black as it will also give good contrast with the 24087.

Most of my trucks have black frames. The ones that don't are not green either. A green frame would most likely indicate either a depot or civilian rebuild.

It seams that the trucks where painted two ways, some with OD frames and some with black frames. Black seams to be the most common and there is no ryhme or reason as to which ones have OD. Most likely is that Jeep ran out of black paint while working on a batch so they painted them green instead. (Jeep is famous for doing stuff like that) There was also a note in a manual somewhere that stated that a black undercoating was to be applied to all wheeled vehicles at the motorpool level at some point.

Now mine, was an OD frame with a black undercoat over it. If you look in the picture right behind the bed mount on the siderail you see some of the original OD paint where the black had started to flake off.

And upon sand blasting the frame, the colors went, black, OD, primer, and bare metal. So for my restoration, I went with an OD frame.
