Thread: What kind of paint is this?

Default What kind of paint is this?

Tried to strip the paint off my bridge plate and number segments for refinishing. I used every stripper I had, including an industrial one. No luck. Strippers never phased it. Could it be a powder coat or something epoxy? Never saw this before. Someone told me CARC was like that but this is yellow.

Probably powdercoated. I have used everything under the sun on some powdercoat material, only to have to literally burn it off with a torch.

Some of that stuff is really hard. If its Dupont Imron, or a really hard urethane enamel, typically stripper will take it off, albeit slowly. A heat gun will soften it too if it is paint. Could be porcelainized as well. Some really old signs were done that way, but I doubt that bridge plates were.

I tried stripping CARC off some rims once, it is a ROYAL pain. If the plate is from a later Mil truck, I wouldn't be surprised if that's what it is, regardless of the color.

It's nasty stuff too, so read up on it before working with it.

I've stripped CARC with a bead-blaster and it came off pretty much like any other hardened enamel. Never tried chemicals though.

CARC generally has an almost sandpaper like texture of about 800 grit or so.....

I got a subdued Data plate and the paint came right off with sand paper.
