    Default Hood lettering stencils/font size?

I am at the stage now where I am starting to begin some of the lettering on the hood, the stars, etc.

I have made stencils using the correct font, and done the small stuff like the dash, tire pressure and fuel tank stuff. When I got to the hood however, I ran into several questions:

Does anyone know the actual font size for the registration numbers along the side of the hood? The only sources I can find list either 2 or 4 inches. 4 is way too big and 2 looks as if it will be too small. According to some pics I have seen it appears that they are 2.5 inches or so high, judged from the hood crease up.

Second, does anyone know how to keep stencils laying flat on a curved surface like the hood sides? I want to paint my letters on, not use vinyl, so its a bit trickier, but wondered if anyone had any ideas?

Yep, I sell decals and paint masks for the 715's. If you want to use painted markings, then my paint masks are far easier to use then cut stencils. The paint mask uses a low tack vinyl decal that you apply, then paint the markings and remove the mask when done. It conforms to the curves on the hood really well, and creates less blemished edges. If you look around my decal site you'll find the information on what sizes all the proper markings are. It's at http://www.i2k.com/~schwarzd/

    Hey Beast,
I know that white was the Army color and yellow was the Marine color...just wondering if anybody has ever used black. If so could you post any pics. Thanks, Jay

I would be interested in some pics as well. I have contemplated going with Sand w/ black markings vs OD w/ white.

The Army and Marines both went to black markings when they switched to the camo patterns, although they stopped using the national symbol (stars) on the hood and doors. And the registration #'s (hood #'s) were moved to inside on the door panels. Like in this pic from my 67' deuce.

The Navy used black markings on thier vehicles from the early 60's on through. Here are some pics of a Navy Seabee truck I did the markings for. The black is actually a flat black decal.

Thanks for the pics guys. That Navy truck looks very good. Did the Navy use the "Army" green?...it kinda looks like it. I like the look of the dark numbers on the o.d. Dave, the mask kits...they are a one time use kit, no? The tack on the back of the makes them distort when removed? I will no doubt pick a set up from you down the road when its body and paint time again. Thanks again, Jay

Yep, the paint masks are a one time use. And the Navy used OD green on vehicles in combat areas, and Haze grey on bases and stateside.
