    Default new paint

I'm planning to repaint my Army M715 and want to go with the original color, does anyone know what commercially available option would be best ?

    Willy,

Original color is a vaig statement because M715 were both gree with white stars and four color cammoflage. It sounds like you want the green with white stars and that color is FSN 24087. This is a semi-gloss green with a brownish look. Gillispie paint is about the best to use as many members can attest to. You can purchase it from Rapco or from Army Jeep Parts. You can get PPG and Martin Semor automotive paint tinted to that color in two part epoxy etc, but you get more bang for your buck with the Gillispie than you do with buying automotive paint and it is easy to use just thin and spray no mixing of hardner and flattener etc.

Now if you do want the four color cammo pattern then your base color is Forest Green 34079, Field Drab (brown) [I forget the fsn #], Sand and black. These are flat paints with no sheen to them. If you do a search on the web there is a bunch of information out there on the paint including the proper pattern to use etc. These paints are also available from Gillispie from Rapco and AJP.

Good luck I hope this helps.

This might be a little off topic, but as we are talking paint, if they think of it, I would like to know of a good source for the sand colored paint? I am planning on painting mine sand with black markings. Does Gillispie paint make the sand also?

After reading the Gillespie page, they mentioned that certain spray paints were incompatible with with their paints. I do not see anyway on this site to contact Gillespie directly. Anyone know which brands to avoid?

Im sure the vendors can help you with that question, the color for your truck when built was 24087, however around 69 or 70 approx. the 4 color cammo was added, alot of trucks depending on their station got that. As well some trucks assigned to Marines or Navy Seebees would have been resprayed USMC green.

Rapco has both 1 gallon cans and spray cans of the Gillespie paints (including the colors for a camo paint job). They fill the spray cans themselves using the 1 gal cans.

Talk to the vendors about the product. I think they mean like don't use x brand spray paint to put on the unit markings etc.

And, actually our vehicles had decals on them instead of paint. The Army went to the decals in the mid-60's so that the vehicles had a clean uniform look to them instead of letting some 18 year old private try his hand at stenciling. For a field repaint, the motorpool could order the decals through the parts system. Unfortunately keeping up with supplies meant that quite a lot of vehicles got repainted and then marked with stencils to save time. If you are thinking about remarking your truck, have a look at my site where I sell the decal kits or paint mask sets, http://www.i2k.com/~schwarzd/ As far as compatability with spary paints, as long as you let the base paint fully cure,(which for Gillespie is around 1 month) then you should be fine. Most problems happen when people get impatiant and paint before the base is fully cured. It can cause the paint to wrinkle or blister as the base cures.
