Thread: Starter Drive

    Default Starter Drive

Is the bendix assembly of the 12V civvy starter interchangeable with the 24V unit? My 12V starter spins great but won't engage, I was going to tear into it and I have a spare 24V I could rob parts from if they are the same. If not I guess I will have to try to find a civvy starter somewhere.

This comes up from time to time and here is my experience from yesterday. My 12V starter gave up a week or so ago. When I removed it, part of the mounting flange including half of one of the bolt holes fell off, the casting had simply broken. I called around to the parts stores and nobody had or could get a starter for a '63 wagoneer with the 3.8 (230) engine. This application would be the civvy 12V starter. I took my broken starter along with a 24V starter I had with a toasted bendix to a pretty good local alternator/starter shop. I told them I wanted a 12V starter and to rebuild whatever to make that happen. They rebuilt the 24V starter with a new bendix assembly and allegedly rewound for 12V. Cost me $95.00. I'll let y'all know how it works after I bolt it up this weekend.

It worked! The beast is back on the road. Hopefully I'm done with that for a while, those starter bolts look easy but are a PITA.
