Thread: Square Tube Roll Cage

    Default Square Tube Roll Cage

I have a lot of 3" square tube. I plan to make into my cage. I do not have the ability to bend it. How has you guys attached your cages to the frame? I'm going to fit it all together and tack it. A certified welder will do the final welding. Pic and measurements would be great.

Holy cow, 3"!? What wall thickness is it? You sure you want to build your cage outta that? Since you can't bend it, you planning on just cutting 45's and having 90 deg. sharp corners, or doing something like multiple 22.5 deg. cuts to give a little bit of a "rounded" corner? Not saying you can't do this, I just don't think you should go this route. That being said, I built a 4 post "headache" rack NOT as a roll cage, but for mounting my antennas and for bed protection (plus good ol' fashioned aesthetics). I used 2 x 1/8 wall square tubing, 2 x 1/8 flat bar for the louvers, and some 1/4" plate here and there.

When I get to building my in cab roll cage, I was thinking like 1-3/4 tube.

Spicergump built a roll bar out of 3" square tubing in his truck for Top Truck 2005, it was a super beefy looking thing, let me look around and see if I can find some pics of what he did, it fit under the top and looked like nothing would hurt it...iirc, he cut 45* cuts about 1 foot from where the top cormers would be to give it a little curve(kinda)...

a roll BAR is one thing, a cage quite another.

Three inch tube is enormous. I'll be doing 2" DOM. Gump's rollbar is beefy as hell, but it's a bar, not a cage. That much tube up high like that WILL affect COG, in a negative way.

    Default 3" cage

I could build the main bar from 3" then reduce down to 2" for the side bars and front hoop. I will gusset all the corners for extra strength. Form what i measured it looks like 1/2 the glove box will be covered and the windshield latchs.
