    Question Alternator/Generator

I'm sure this question has been asked many times before, but does a stock Tornado 230 have a alternator or a generator? It says generator on the side plate, but everyone says it's an alternator.

Yep...it is an alternator from the factory...I dont know of any of the older generators that would be a direct bolt on either...the unit that the M715 uses interchanges with those used on many other MV's of the era...different manufacturers, like Ford, Leece Neville, etc. but all alternators and interchangeable.

As stated above. The M715 came with an alternator. Everything I have researched shows them to be the first MV to leave the factory with internal regulated alternators. Everything else in production at the time had the externally regulated generators and were then transitioned into the alternators.

Yes, it is possible to get one of the external generators, swap the pulleys and bolt it right up to the stock alternator mount. Then of course the regulator will have to be mounted somewhere and then wired up. It can be done but with the "bread box" regulator boxes going for almost $100 not including the generator on auction sites. Why?

I went the other way on my Gasser M35. To the same alternator the M715 has. Much better.

That answers that, thanks. Any reason the steel plate on the alternator says generator on it? I guess that's what confused me.

An alternator is officially an "AC Generator." People just started using alternator to keep down the confusion between an AC generator and a DC generator. That is my guess at least.
