The slip ends of both driveshafts are at the transfer case.

The slip joints on my M715 are located at the axles. That's the way it was when I got it. And I dont see any need to change it.

And speaking as a former driveshaft engineer who worked at Dana, the slip joints on an internal slip driveshaft are usually located at the axles.

The transfer case-to-axle propeller shafts also have splined slip joints at the transfer case end to allow for variations in the length caused by vehicle spring action. The intermediate shaft is of fixed length.

    Emphasis mine.

I just went back and looked at pics of my M715 during tear down and both had the slip yoke end at the transfer case. On my off-road Jeep (78' Cherokee) both are at the axles. I don't know why the military went with the facing that direction?

I just checked and both of my propeller shafts have the slip joint to the front of the vehicle. I did see in one TM an illustration that showed the rear shaft having the slip joint connected to the transfer case.

    Hmmm.

I don't know if there is a standard on slip joints on driveshafts, I have seen the slip joint on the axle end and the transfer case end. it seems that most of the Fords and GMs that we have at work with slip joint driveshafts, the slip joints are closer to the transfer case. would like to hear the reasoning either way what is correct.

I don't think it matters, except that the axle side is more exposed to impacts from rocks, cyclists...
