Thread: Steering column bearings

    Default Steering column bearings

While disassembling my steering column today, the upper plastic bearing retainer broke from age.
The white colored plastic was turning brown in spots.
I've read here about the bottom bearing still available NOS, what about the top one?
I guess that I will call Memphis first. Their prices seem a lot higher, but they might have the better chance of having both, so that I can save on shipping.
    Anyone buy both recently?

    You mean these?

VPW has boxes of them. They are still 45 years old, but unused.

    Yes, Those!
    Funny thing,
I called VPW a few weeks ago asking about a few other items, and I asked them about steering column bearings.
I got silence on the phone, and he asked me for part numbers, which I didn't have handy.
I really wonder, if they know for sure what they have in those containers.
I will have to call them back.

I don't think they really know what they have in the shipping containers. I've been on the phone with them almost weekly over different parts and I give them the part numbers and sometimes it's like "Raiders of the Lost Ark". Othertimes, even on the phone it's like a WALMART on Black Friday when rumor gets around that they possibly have a elusive rare part they might have found in one of those CONEX boxes.

I don't blame VPW though. They just don't have the manpower to inventory everything. I wish they did. Life would be much easier. I'm glad to hear they have the nylon bushing though because I need 1 also :-p

Remember that the M715 parts are second fiddle to the Dodge M37 and WW2 Dodge stuff.

Nobody there is an expert on the M715 stuff. You gotta take your chances sometimes.

Or be like me and go there once a year.

I just got off of the phone with VPW.
The guy answering the phone today was right on the ball.
They still have plenty of the--
--Lower plastic steering column bearings at $10.00 each
--Upper plastic steering column bearing retainers as shown in fishtail's picture, at $10.00 each
--If you need the actual little bearing for the upper bearing retainer, they have only about a dozen left at $29.95

    No rag joints left

They still have the rubber covers for the transfer case levers also.

are the transfer case lever rubbers something they made, or originals?

    The lever covers are originals.

They have the rag joints yet. I saw a whole box of them. I'm at work now or I'd post the picture.
