Default barrman : 24 Volt Welding

    24 Volt Welding
Post by barrman on Oct 16, 2006, 2:52pm

This came up at the Texas FE as a possible fix for Koobsters sector shaft. What rods has anybody used successfully to weld with 24V? I figured I should add some to my tool box once I know what works.

    Thanks.

There was an article in Jp about this a few months back. Going from my horrendous memory, I think 6014 worked the best. Something about 24v being too weak for 7018 rod, and 36v was too much.

Crap, now I gotta go try to find it.

I thought it was (more)currant that did the job, not (less) voltage?

    Fudge, I don't know!

I did try it once with 7018, and got a bead run. It looked like dooky, but it worked.

You are right, the amperage is what affects the weld, not the voltage. The short circuit voltage of most welding machines is generally about 28 volts as I remember.

I would recomend using 6013. I am not familiar with 6014 so I can not comment.

7018 is a low hydrogen rod and needs to be stored in low humidity conditions.

Well I was reading on the ready welder and it does sheet with 12v, up to 1/2inch at 24v, and up to 3/4 at 36v. I guess it comes into play more than I thought, but 3/4 inch!?

    Lookee here...

I'm inclined to say the 6013 as well, but DC is wrecking my confidence about it.
