Default Autolite 2407 have we been running the wrong plugs all along?

Well the M715 seams to have fouled a plug as it has been a little sluggish since the memorial day parade so I figured I would change them to see if that picks it back up. Well I pulled the Autolite 2344's out and went to in stall the spare set I thought I had only find out they are spares for the Dodge M37 I have. So I went to order a new set from Napa online and just wanted to check things out real quick and everything here on the Zone says to use the 2344 but I found a chart on the M38 site that list the proper plug as being the 2407.

And it shows that the heat range is much higher in the 2407 than the 2344 but that they are the same 14mm 1/2" reach.

So I looked and Napa does carry them at the same price as the 2344 but in the pictures the 2407 look like they have a slightly shorter body than the 2344. So I ordered them and we'll see when they get here how they compare. And if I get a chance, I will pull one from the M725 which still has the same plugs in it since it was in service with the Army. (My M725 was a rare Army keep, as it was in use all the way up to 1994 when it was surplused) I found a few references here on the Zone about the 2407 but no one ever answered about them, so we'll see if we have been running and recommending the wrong plugs all these years.

I looked this up not long ago just for the heck of it.

    See this thread
    Hot plugs - cold plugs?

There are a few cross references there listed, but the 2344 and 2407 are lsted there in some of the charts.

The jegs chart listed seems to have disappeared from the previous thread... it was the specs for the 2407 and the cross references...
I'm sure its still on JEGS somewhere... but the link is boken now for some reason.

The AER72S is a Motocraft plug, and cross refereneces to an Autolite 2407: Rboltz recommended the motocraft plug with this number ( still a 2407 when crossed )

    16 bucks a plug? ouch.

Yes I had seen the other threads but in none of them has anyone actually run the Autolite 2407 plugs. I was looking for someone who had actually used them to see if they are infact shorter which will help with installing the plug wires on them. Plus the hotter plug should help with the fouling from low speed driving.

And Napa has them for only $7.99, I don't know why Jegs would list them for double that at $16.99. It makes it a real easy choice for someone, for where not to get them from. Once these come in and if they spec out correctly I will more than likely have my local Napa order me another set as I have a dealer account with them and should get dealer pricing.

Well I finally got conformation from NapaOnline that my plugs have finally shipped so sometime early next week I should have them and be able to compare the 2407 to the 2344. I was a little disappointed in napaonline as they showed the plugs were in stock, but infact they had to special order them from Autolite. So word of caution it will take a little longer to get the 2407s.

And the 2407 is about 7/16" shorter than the 2344, makes install much easer.

Ken, All I can tell you is that people smarter than me at the factory determined what proper heat range and length was needed for each engine. The proper plug for the M-38 is an Autolite (Or Champion equivalent) 2243. It is a 14mm x 3/8" reach plug. In a heat range of three plugs, it is the coolest. It is also the same plug for the M-37, M-35, and the M-54 series gas trucks. The next hotter plug is the Autolite 2245 for the M-38A1 and the M-151. The hottest plug in this particular series is the Autolite 2247 for the 4 cylinder Mule and the Mighty Mite. All these plugs are 14mm by thread diameter and 3/8" thread length. The M-715 has a plug all to itself, the Autolite 2344. That plug is 14mm x 1/2" reach. The 2 cylinder Mule and the 5KW generator share the same plug which is a Champion XMD-15 18mm x 3/8" My source of information is the research of each of the ORD 9's or the 35P parts manuels for each vehicle. I took the plug ordnance number and used the master spark plug catalog of Champion to convert to their part number. I sell all the plugs, which are new, for $8.50 each. Kevin.

Well my plugs came the other day and I was able to get some pics of the two different plugs. Yes, the 2407 is quite a bit shorter than the 2344 and did make it just a bit easier to install the original waterproof plug wires.

The big advantage I found was that there is more room to finger tighten the waterproof caps so that all it needs is just a snug with the special plug wrench. And like everyone else who ordered through Napa Online, I ordered 6 plugs and paid for 6 plugs but they shipped 2 boxes of 4 plugs so I received 2 free plugs in the deal. So it appears that the 2407 plug is the plug we should be running in these trucks.
