Thread: Tried to Start my Truck Today...

Default Tried to Start my Truck Today...

...after static timing it according to the TM (I thought). A few attempts got a few stumbles, a HUGE backfire, and this:

No idea what happened here, but I’m starting to think that fractured gear might be collateral damage from some other failure, because there’s no oil pressure while cranking which there was previous to this mess.

Gotta go pull the block drain plug & drain the descaler in there.

It looks like the case is too tight.

I think a person would really have to work at over tightening those nuts to duplicate what you see.

This is a first in my experience...wow...I am stunned...

Like it built up that much pressure inside the motor somehow or something is not where its supposed to be and did it?

Weird the lack of oil too...worm gear on crank shot or oil pump done in??

Will be watching this with interest...sure sorry it came your way...bet you are too...

Wow. Sorry to see that pretty cover so trashed.

    Uh Oh.

Maybe on the timing you had the distributor 180 degrees out? I don't mean to sound patronizing, ...I'm just thinking out loud.

About the oil pressure...hmmm. It could be a whole host of things yes? Plugged oil galley before the pump? Maybe it's one of the things that Brute said...the cam gear is worn or the oil pump failed.

Do those 230s have an oil filter bypass?

Do you have insects where you live that could crawl up into a crankcase vent tube and plug it with a nest? We used to call them "mud daubers" when I was younger. They're a wasp that makes solid mud nests.

The good news is that I have seen those covers on eBay, which you probably already knew.

    Sorry man.

The clamps across the rocker cover aren't very deformed. If tightened too much, they usually bend. Could there have been an air/fuel mixture in the rocker area which exploded?

Wow. Awesome destruction. maybe a mis-timing and backfired back through the intake valve.

Man, that's nuts. Something went Kablooey! Detonation of some sort or hit the cover from underneath..? Broken cam? I don't remember how the cam is situated under there.
(Just asked the Google for a pic... Maybe if the cam broke somewhere in the front 1/4 it might flip up and hit the cover...? )

I have a cover laying around I can probably be talked out of for shipping. Keep meaning to hang it up as art but it's been laying in corner for years.
That is, if you still need a cover after finding out what happened.
