Thread: Cracked tornado block

  1. #1

    Default Cracked tornado block

I've been doing a timing set and valve job on my tornado 230 and while in the process of cleaning the block and pistons and found a crack in the surface and some wear between two cylinders. I was wondering if this is something repairable or am I looking at sourcing a better block? Part of the reason for removing the head was checking the head gasket for leaks in tracking down oil in my coolant. Crack shown in pics.

I would have to wonder if the cost of fixing that is worth it...might want to get an engine shop to check and see how deep/how much to fix but I would think its gonna be pricey....even though 230's aren't cheap on anything, I still think it would be the cheaper/long term more reliable way to go...

    My 2 cents...

Since posting this, quote on repairing crack is minimum 4 hrs welding with 50/50 chance of it cracking again. The head was also cracked over nearly it's entire length. Unfortunately I've already sunk so much into this 230. Will be posting up for sale the good parts I have left and looking at a swap.

My machine shop told me today that the head is for sure trash. If I can find a complete motor somewhere in reasonable driving distance I'll try and pick it up.

Nuts. I threw away a head a few years back, against my better judgment. I knew I should have kept that.
