Over heating
Post by jeepcj on Oct 29, 2006, 6:20pm

I've been rebuilding axles and transfercases the last few months so I had not started my truck in a while. Anyway she fired right up and sounded fine. It's a chevy tall deck 427. It was cool today so I let it warm up for 10 minutes or so. Well after 10 minutes the guage read 240 and water was coming out of the rad. Why would it over heat so fast?

Water pump?

Water pump or stuck closed thermostat as a second guess. Of course, how much water was in it from the start?

I would say stuck thermostat, since you have ran it in awhile.

427's actually have two thermostats side by side. If one is open while the other is stuck, it might allow enough coolant to circulate so that it appears to be flowing back to the radiator and yet not be moving enough water to cool the engine.
