Thread: 230 oil pump drive gear

Default 230 oil pump drive gear

Has anyone used a steel oil pump drive gear on the crankshaft in place of the original bronze gear? I cannot find any new bronze gears just new steel gears from Memphis Equipment. I'm just wondering if steel on steel would eat itself or should I use a used bronze gear.

I remember one person who went through 2 of the brass ones and then went to the steel...didnt hear of any more trouble after that...

    Only thing I know...

I installed the steel gear and ran the engine a couple hours and the timing moved slightly from 5 degrees BTDC where I set it to about 3 BTDC. I wonder if the gear wore some already. Hopefully the gears will fit themselves in and not wear anymore.

First post can oil pump drive gear be replaced with out removeing the front cover? I have my new toy ,got it running ,than timing is on the moon. I remove plugs and dist. cap ,turn engine backwards and it almost 1/4 turn before rotor moves. I think there is alot of play in the drive gear. It look think you remove front crank seal ,oil pump shaft ,slinger and than gear. is that right??? thanks . I will post pic of vehicle soon

Turning the engine backwards causes the slack side of the timing chain to come under tension. The tentioner is a simple design and can't take out all the slack when turning engine backwards. Not recommended. I wouldn't disassemble the engine yet.

Yes the drive gear can be removed from the seal bore in the timing cover. Remove the distributor, oil pump, damper, seal, slinger then the gear. You will probably need to remove the radiator to allow clearance to use a puller on the vibration damper.
