Thread: Tail light Packard connector size

  1. #1

Default Tail light Packard connector size

I picked up a new set of stock tail lights for my M715 and need to know what size the Packard connectors are (12 or 14 gauge) . I have a non stock wiring but hate to cut the nice stock connectors off the tail lights and insert a butt connector. Thanks for the information.

Rick, I believe that the whole truck is 14 AWG for the wiring (except starter, battery etc.). But wait for others to reply please. My truck is 737 miles away from me right now so I can't check, sorry...

Don is correct about the truck being all the same size wire everywhere.

You can buy replacement Packard connectors. Ebay normally has some listed all the time under military trucks. There is supposed to be a special tool, but a regular crimper can be make to work.
Remember if you didn't build it you can't call it yours.

The wires insulation strips with a stripping pliers as if it is 12 gauge...the actual wire inside is 14 gauge when putting on a butt splice or terminal end...not sure which is the one to pick...always found it a confusion...

    Should be 14 AWG.

The proper tool. It puts four dents into the barrel simultaneously. But, a regular crimp tool will work. The advantage of all four crimps is that the original size of the barrel will stay the same. These come up on eBay from time to time. Hmm, can you guess where I got this one?

What I meant about the original size of the barrel saying the same is that with the four crimps, the barrel won't be oval and will still fit the Packard rubber cover properly.

Thanks everyone. I ordered some 14 gauge connectors from Saturn.

The regular crimper tool didn't work. All it did was smash the metal piece and allow the wire to fall out. I took to soldering the wire in and voila!
