    Default Steering Column Rebuild

I have been asked to post the rebuild instructions of when I fixed my column.

The diagrams and instructions are in the -34 tech manual, Chapter 15. You will need to remove the steering wheel and then remove the column.

The lower bushing and the boot where torn. I ordered the bushing from Memphis Equipment for ~$30 and the boot kit from http://www.jeep4x4center.com/jeep-st...herokee-sj.htm. Item #4 ~$11

The boot kit is not an exact fit and needs to be modified. The shafts are a different shape.

Here are the old parts layed out

This is the lower bushing that I replaced. Memphis Equipment has new ones.

This is the new kit and the old parts

Make sure you re connect the horn wire

The horn wire slips into the top bushing

I greased the new lower bushing. I hope it helps

I greased the new bushing. Hope it heps.

    The new buttons are attached

Make sure you grease the joint

Putting the joint together. This picture was taken before I knew I had to trim the boot.

    Reassemble per the instuction manual.

You may want to replace the rag joint at this time. It is easier to do it now while the column is out of the truck.

    Good Luck

Thank you for the write-up. Very good to see the details before tearing into the column.

    Nice!!

    Jon,
Is there any way to compile all of these tech writeups into a file? Might save some repetitive questions from making it on the boards. Using a search doesn't always make finding information easy.

Nice write up. I performed the same task with the new boot trimmed in the same manner. However I was lucky and did not need the new bushing. Very nice.
