Thread: Radials OK on Stock Wheels?

Default Radials OK on Stock Wheels?

I found some military surplus radials I'd like to get for the truck, but I'm wondering about compatibility with the stock wheels. Any thoughts?

Run radial tubes and all will be good.
Remember if you didn't build it you can't call it yours.

    Alrighty, thanks!

I have to know: what could possibly be the difference between the tubes in my NDCC's and radial tubes?

radial tubes are designed to take more heat than bias ply tubes. The radial tire design flexes differently than the bias ply tires. One notable difference is that radial tubes are thicker (heavier).

What type of radial tires did you find?

Thanks for the explanation Kwai. I never knew about the thickness variation.

I found some brand-new Michelin XL's on eBay. Expensive, but they'll get better traction, probably more flat resistant (I got a flat from a Russian Olive thorn this winter), and they'll likely be the last set of tires I ever have to buy for such an occasional-use vehicle.

I have 16 year old XZL tires on my M715. 14 year old XL tires on my M35. I have read stories about the sidewalls cracking. They do a little. If you have any cracking, do not air down enough to get side wall flex. Basically, below 15 psi or so. That is when they blow out.

I had a bad tube on my Whistler and didn't know it. That tire was low and I didn't know it. 5 miles later I kept hearing air in time with my speed. That sidewall was gone from the bead to the tread.

I will make a note of that, Barr. Thank you.
