Thread: Spark plugs...

    Exclamation Spark plugs...

I took an old spark plug with me to Napa last Monday, the man behind the counter read the number that was stamped on it. He and came up with a cross reference number for Autolite spark plugs. (Autolite 2344) He showed me the picture of it on his computer, looks the same. So I placed some on order. I picked up my new spark plugs from Napa Friday after work. Saturday morning I started working on the motor, change oil, fuel filter new points, condenser, drained the old gas. Etc. Etc. Then I started to install the new plugs and wires. Set the gap on the plugs. I installed the first one then the second one. Something looked odd, but I could not place it. Then I tried to screw the plug wires on. I could not get the nut to turn because it was hitting the wire next to it. I know they are close to begin with, but this was too close. So I compared one of the new plugs to an old one, and the new one was 1/4inch longer! Has anyone ever had this problem? I hope Napa takes these back. There is no way they will work.

Sorry, that was me, folks. "Barney" is my "noob member" log-in for use when I want to check something on the Zone as a new member would see it. I didn't want the "Purpletown, USA" location to give anyone the idea that creative locations are okay. They're not.

Interestingly, I used the Google search function with "site:m715zone.com" to get that archived info. Worked slick!

    He said that:

So I compared one of the new plugs to an old one, and the new one was 1/4inch longer!
So it would have to be out of the engine to make such a comparison....or were you bs-ing on the tech boards?

Placed on a table not in the engine, they were 1/4 inch longer. When they were in the engine SCREWED IN and torqued. The ends were pointed to close together to get the plug wires on. My camera is not working or I would take a picture to show you. Hey Armada, I got the joke.
Thanks Barney/Binford I am on my way to Napa, with the new numbers.

AHHH, you compared them OUT of the engine..... Just bs-ing...lol
I ordered a set of new plugs last week. When they get here I'll make sure to compare them to the old ones also.

    Default Size does matter

Just one more note on this from me... I measured the spark plugs before going to Napa and returning the plugs. The original one was 3 inches from end to end. The Autolite 2344 was 3 3/8" long from end to end. The socket size was still 13/16s and the grip length on the electrode side was 1/2" The extra length was on the shielded side. In other words the body was longer. Time to call AB Linn.

Thanks for that follow up...it will help others down the road.

Still have to wonder why, after all these years, the plugs changed....cant be too many other appliations that use our number, can there?
