Thread: 12 volt starter for the 230

Smile 12 volt starter for the 230

Hey all! I am currently working with a tech from IMI Torque Starters. I am having him send me a starter that he swears is a direct replacement. I've used their starters in the past on hot rods and such. They are light at only a few pounds vs the heavy stock ones. When I get it in I will post part numbers for those interested.

The part number is: IMI-122-009 THIN (12V Version Only). It is a modified starter. They had to machine the base plate down to give enough for the pinion to engage the fly wheel. They are shipping it to me now. Hopefully it will work. Will let you know.

The starter they sent me did not work. I measured the original and sent them a schematic. I think they are going to build a whole new unit. If it works I'll let ya know.

Hey man those guys at IMI are top notch. We now have a viable 12v starter option. I've got a M724 with the Tornado 230. Still runs great. If you want or need one contact Jack Isom jack@hitorque.com or Chris Isom chris@hitorque.com. They are nice folks and will definitely work with ya. Hope this helps some of you out there.

This is great info...thanks for posting.

The original 230 civilian engine 12 volt starters work, but they are getting REAL hard to find...an alternative is GREAT!

Yeah I couldn't find a civvy unit. They don't make em anymore. They also no longer make rebuild prts for the 24volt units from what I've been told. I figured I would contact a manufacturer and see what they could do. I lucked out with the IMI guys. They really did go beyond my expectations. I rather enjoy the hunt too. I'm just glad I got a starter now and now anyone that wants one can order one. Kinda makes me all fuzzy inside. Ha ha

One thing the stock starters are, and that is heavy! I put a new one in my truck the day after I had Carpal Tunnel surgery. Not a good idea. It's hard to hold in place and get the bolts started. Another set of hands is always helpful. Send out a picture of your new one if possible. Is it a lot smaller than the original?

These new starters only weigh a couple of pound. If you have converted to 12v it hooks up with one wore and bolts to the original spot; bolts up and go.
