That is the right points gap....to hook up a dwell meter one needs to know what the particular meter wants...mine is a Sears unit and it hooks up with one lead clipped to coil negative and the other to a good ground. I prefer the dwell method myself.
Which unit would be better? As long as they are both accurate, its probably a moot point.
The dwell setting for a stock military ignition:
38? to 44?
An ignitor dwell angle of more than 44? (small gap) may cause hard starting. A reading of less than 38? (large gap) may cause engine to misfire at high speeds or underload.
