The core or the "red form" you see is made of about 20 laminations of metal sheet. This is typical for all motor/ alternators it helps with the magnetic fields generated at the rotor in this case. The wood shims are used to keep the wire in place while you wind, after all is wound a laquer is applied and that cements the whole thing together.

The stator core you see is in every 715 alt, you can see this section if you look closely at the alt you can see the laminations on the outside. Thats if it hasn't been painted ten times.
