Thread: Stupid HUB

    Default Stupid HUB

So I got my new brake cylinder and was going to put it on and I can see differential fluid coming out of the hub seal. SO.. I pulled the hub off with the 2.5" socket and then pulled to hub. The front bearing came out with ease, but I can't seem to get the seal out so I can take it to napa to get a new one. WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO GET THIS SEAL OUT???
HAMMER?! PLYERS??! A FLAT SCREW DRIVER ?!

I pulled mine out using a slide-hammer rear-axle puller. quick and easy.

I have a dent puller slide hammer, what does a rear axle puller look like, do you think I would make something to attach to my dent puller and pull it out that way??

I'm not sure you guys understand I have the hub off the axle, but the seal is stuck in the back of the hub sitting on my back tail gate(closest work bench)

Take a WIDE flat blade screw driver, put it just under the seal and twist to get leverage...keep doing that around the edge and see if that helps...careful use of a bent screwdriver or a prybar with a bent end will work nice too.

I put the hub in a vise and used the puller to yank it out.
Given your specific circumstances, you can destroy the seal since you are replacing it anyway. Get a large wrecking bar and go to work. Should come out without too much trouble.

A lot of times working around the inner edge of it with a heel bar against the back of the bearing will pull a seal out pretty easily. . .see if you can get the numbers off the back of the seal before you destroy it, . .makes it easier to match up at the parts store, . ..

I don't remember if this works on the M715 or not, but it does work on most vehicles.

Remove the nut, washer and outer bearing. Put the nut back on. Pull the hub out until it touches the nut. While holding the hub down so it will hit the nut, give it a good pull. This will normally pop the seal off the first try. If not, rotate it a bit and try again.

AB Linn has a complete vehicle set of hub seals for around $16. Just so you don't go spend $30 each for the rear ones.
Remember if you didn't build it you can't call it yours.
