Where can I buy a socket for the 715 that's not +$40. Do the mil parts guys have these? I don't see them advertised with little to no looking. I've also seen where there has been mention of 2 1/2" or 2 9/16" do both work?

2 9/16" is the proper size. I paid like $8 for mine from the local tool wholesaler. Just a cheap thin-wall socket.
I have an NOS one that says 2 9/16ths on it. VPW had some...might still...
Harbor Freight also has those as well in a cheaper stamped steel version.....
My local NAPA store has some too, in the OTC line and they were about $30.00 last time I checked.
Just for clarification, some members have found 2-1/2" spindle nuts, so there may have been a variation from the factory in that part, there are a few other differences from truck to truck.
Anyway, I would guess that the 2-9/16 would get the job done on either if you needed it to.
This post is closed-captioned for the hearing impaired.
Get one of each and report back! 2-1/2" fits mine, front and rear - or used to until I used it to help press some stuff for my VW.

A 2 1/2" thin wall socket worked on my front end. Make sure you DON'T get the one with rounded corners. Around $20, IIRC.
Just a down and dirty tape measure review says 2 1/2" but as stated these trucks were sometimes put together with what was around at the time and the variations are undocumented. I will try harbor freight first.
Cover yourself, and then some! Harbor Freight has a whole 7-pc set of 'em for $41!
