Thread: Best power steering option for welded front end

Default Best power steering option for welded front end

What would be the best power steering option for a welded up front end. I running stock tires. And I have locking hubs on the front so it drives fine on the road. But it about breaks my arm in the woods. I'm done dead after 20 minutes of driving offroad. Would the GM box and pump work and turn desently easly or would a cylinder option work better?

Get a tapped sagnaw steering box and add a ram.

Yes, a drilled and tapped PS box with a ram assist sounds like a good option.

You could probably drill and tap the FSJ box too, then it would be a bolt on affair. I did an XJ box with no problem a few years ago.

I have the drilled and tapped saginaw with ram assist from the renowned Bob Cowan. The ram is almost too big, it is almost dicey on the road but it IS effortless to steer. I sometimes have to listen to make sure I'm not twisting anything off the axle.
But as for ease of steering....got it in spades.

Ram assist is great, but I haven't driven one on the road, so I assume that the input would be pretty sensitive.

IT will break steering components if say, you have a tire against a rock and lean on the wheel a bit too hard......

If I were you I would put the front back to stock or if you really need it locked put in a detroit or limited slip. It sucks to not be able to steer offroad. I don't even like the detroit in the front end because it pushes so bad in corners which makes a truck that is hard to turn even worse. Power steering isn't going to make it steer any better.

Do you drill and tap the gear box yourself of do you need a professional to do it? I might get a wagoneer gear box. Do any of ya'll have pics of were to drill and tap? What kind of ram do any of you use?

Too add what I said above. I found a 79 wagoneer box with no pitman arm. Will the stock pitman arm fit on the splines of the wagoneer box?

No, the arm on the stock (non power) steering gearbox will not fit the power steering gearbox. The tapered, splined hole is considerably larger on the stock box.
