Thread: Steering wheel replacement.

    Default Steering wheel replacement.

The truck I'm rebuilding will need a new steering wheel. Any sources? I understand Waggoner or J10 wheels may fit? If so, must any changes be made to the horn button?

The civvy wheel from 73 and back is the same as ours and will bolt on and work fine. Horn too...you do have a couple different choices when it comes to the horn button....they used a big metal piece that "hangs down" from the standard horn button...I think there might have been 2 versions of those...
Personally, I think they are bulky and in the way when off road so I wouldnt run one...but your truck is YOURS!

Is your wheel really bad? I have seen many wheels that just have some cracks repaired an refinished, they look just as new. J B Weld is a popular filler used for this then sanding an same paint as you would use on the truck w/ hardner added for durability.

The wheel is cracked at the "hub". Seems solid enough but the metal cup that is on the bottom of the wheel won't stay on because the hub is expanded due to the crack. It slides down the column. I imagine I could do what you suggest and then epoxy the cup to the hub. There is no reference to the wheel or it's parts in the parts manuals or repair manuals that I can find so my parts explanation might not be the right terminology.

I got one from a Early 70's Wagoneer, it wasn't quite a fit on the shaft but after some careful fitting (I used a 1/2" drill and a 7/8ths bit) It pressed on just fine and tight with some urging from the retaining nut.
