Sounds like something may be wrong. Mine didn't make any noise except when I forgot to double clutch. It's pretty easy to pull up the floor and cover just to look around, but don't use an aluminum flashlight and accidently drop it down into the tranny...don't ask me how I know about that one...

1st gear will have a distinct sound to it. The several T-98s and the T-18 that I'm familiar with have it. I wouldn't call it grinding necessarily but more of a low whine with a bit of a grind to it. How's that?

OH no...first problem looks like. The noise..is, well, quite loud..Kinda like throwing steel balls on a tin roof.. Was told its always done that..either way.. I cant do anything till i get it home..was just wondering if yours do the same thing.

Doesn't sound good....in low, you should hear a sort of gear noise, like a whine, growl, maybe, but no steel balls on tin roof!

Sounds like a really bad bearing, or perhaps a chipped tooth. Pull the floor and trans top cover and see what you can see.

just drain the lube. it will tell the story. they probably hurt it cauz 1 st gear isnt syncro, you have to come to a stop to put it in that gear correctly, they probably didnt and hurt the trans. but i,am only a mechanic and just guessing

So many people swap the motor and tranny together, you should be able to pick up a whole tranny for a lotcheaper than fixing whatever damage you find.
