Thread: Hood Latches

    Default Hood Latches

Does anyone know if the stock CJ or other jeep hood latches are the same as they use on one of our trucks? I can't find mine and the hood gets a little light going over 30'ish on some test runs around the block.

And no I won't put chrome ones on if they fit the old bolt holes in the fenders.

    Thanks,
    Scott

If you cant find anything but chrome, you could try scuffing them with scotchbrite and shooting them OD, would probably last for a while.

I cannot declare them identical, as I haven't put them side by side, but the length, width and height dimensions are very similar to a '81 CJ8. If they are not identical, I doubt anyone would notice. The bolt holes are 1.5" o.c. on both vehicle types, so the bolt alignment is also correct.

Stock CJ latches are different. The difference is the angle at the bottom where it goes into the bracket that fastens to the fender.
AB Linn used to have the correct latches.

AB has them, so does this place. I bought 5 from him back in March.

I don't think the spring is as strong in the CJ latches either. I tried some on a '71 Wag I built that didn't have room for the stock latch. The hood would float to the end of the spring every time a semi would pass me.

Dang it, I promised that I wouldn't give any bad tech.

Thanks to others for the follow-ups, as the angle was one thing that I hadn't considered in my hasty measurements while the two trucks were handy.

I'll go and sit in the corner for awhile...the lower left corner.

Has anyone tried the JC Whitney ones? I've seen them, but I haven't needed to buy any yet- gonz

Thanks guys, I went down to the 4 Wheel Supply in Phoenix and they had 2 types, one was obviously the ticket. Only cost mile like 10 bucks for both, the bolt up great. I really only bolted up the bottom hooks since I didn't loose the brackets on the hood but it looks like those would work fine.

    Thanks,
    Scott
