When you do the clutch, make sure you put in a new pilot bearing. It could very well be the cause of your 1st and reverse grinding going into gear. Putting it into second and then flipping to first or reverse normally lets you get by though.

Thanks and you are right. I got a complete clutch assembly and new flywheel from him for 1/3 of what others wanted. I also found 4 pilot bearing/bushings that I was told couldn't be found even though not from him. I grew up in Lexington. Where are you? Shortround
