Thread: Upper door gasket

  1. #1

    Default Upper door gasket

I'm not sure if this is classified as a stock topic but seemed rather basic for a modified thread. Also this project was almost too simple to post but when I was looking for replacement gasket I wasn't sure what to get and I thought the stuff I ordered was a good replacement.

This is what I had to start with.

Door seals were dried out, cracked, missing sections and leaked bad. Sound familiar?

I purchased the generic door seal kit from bjsoffroad.com (part # 10-9036). Installation was simple. I just pulled off the old seal and then pressed on the new. One kit did the upper for both doors with a little cutting. Here is the results.

It hasn't rained yet to let you know how well it works but it makes better contact with the door than before so I don't see why it wouldn't work better. This was a simple project, it took 30-45 minutes and I had to kids asking "what are you doing?" roughly every 2 minutes so your time may vary.

Now I just need to figure out something for the door (lower) gasket. I think finding a good substitute will be a bit more of a challenge.

I would check the J-truck seal, you can also get that from BJ's. If there's one thing Jeep/Kaiser didn't do was change what worked.

Kit was $29.75, but the kicker was the shipping $13.28 . So from now on I will just bundle my orders from them to spread that cost over more items. Lesson learned.

Unless I'm not mistaken, J trucks used the w.s. type that attached to the body, as opposed to the door. However, I believe that I viewed a '67 Waggy at the salvage yard that had the w.s. on the door, but it might be difficult to find the door type through an aftermarket source since that was an early type application. I tried to remove it, but it just flaked off and fell apart.

Speaking of salvage yards, I found them to be a great source for w.s., and I used some old IH Scout rubber for my window frames. The nice thing about it was that it already had the 90 degree corner, so it's not rounded like the above picture. J trucks had the same form, but it was thinner than the Scout rubber, and I wanted the thick stuff.

I tried some on the frame for the door, but the door wouldn't shut after I had applied it. I can't remember what I used for the doors.

With those new seals in place, can you roll up the windows with the doors closed?

I have puffy seals like that on mine too, and the windows have torn them up. Have to open the doors to roll up the windows.

I'll go dig up the thread for the door seals again. It's about time it made a re-appearance, eh?

To tell you the truth I haven't rolled the windows up and down since the weather here has been so nice. I would say that the interference between window and gasket is low, due to the amount of play in the window itself(on my truck). This may change as I want to go through that system next to increase the ease of rolling the window up/down and reduce the rattle.
