Thread: Cool junk for your first aid kit

Default Cool junk for your first aid kit

This stuff (powder) stops bleeding in about 15 seconds.

Bought it at Cabela's. It's called QR powder. It has gelatin and some type of salt in it. Part number# HG 51-7355 Costs 9.99 for one pack. Should come in handy when you accidentally whack off your left leg when chopping kindling. This will effectively keep you from wrecking a perfectly good camping trip with an unplanned trip to town and a 27 hour wait in the nearby ER with your leg in hand.
I know the military and I think some EMT's might be using it.
Figured some of you guys might be interested.

    Bleed on....

I've seen this stuff used first hand, I know it works on anything less than arterial. Good stuff.

The military is using QuikClot and the advanced kits have the powder in a sponge that is supposed to work better than the powder alone. It's made from some sort of crab shell or something. Check with a local EMT before using any of this type stuff though. It's a military field dressing and apparently a lot of hospitals don't yet know what it is or what to do with it when they get a patient with it applied. I currently have both kits in my medic bag.

They have similar stuff for horses and cats and dogs. Dunno if those products are approved for human use or not, however!

I ran into 3 firefighter/EMT's in ACE hardware yesterday. They had heard of it but don't use it. They mentioned that the hospitals may not like to deal with the byproduct or cleanup. He said it was probably best for an outdoors first aid kit where help is a ways away

Would be nice to find something that rinses it away easily.
