Thread: Doors gone wild

    Default Doors gone wild

What was meant to keep the doors from flinging open and creasing the fender. I've. looked at the manuals and can't find anything that would do this. What am I missing?

    The hinge.

Open your door and look at the hinges bolted to the door sill. You can see two bolts per hinge, but there is a 3rd set deep down inside. The bracket bolted to the sill stops the big cast arm from going too far and keeps it from creasing the sill.

But, if you take out those two deep down bolts, the hinge will flex enough to scratch and even dent your fender. (Ask me how I know about that one).

mine must be bent out of shape because both doors touch the fender and the hinges are complete. After looking at them last night I can see that the strips of metal that would contact the CI arm is bent. Someone long ago must have let the doors get taken by the wind or purposely janked them open. What a pain, I had the door off a long time ago and now I'll have to do it again

If your leading edge of your doors are bent they will contact the fender no matter what the hinges are doing.

A trick I use when changing doors since I do it once a season is to use pipe insulation. 1" foam wrap (The long black stuff) fits on the leading edge of the door and keeps the fender from getting scratched up.

An easy or temporary fix would be to get yourself a couple footman loops and nylon strap the door like a CJ. Personally, I haven't had to do this, but it should work.

Do a Sisson and take the doors off.
