both my m715 and m725 have rust / rot spots on the firewall just to the upper left of the master cylinder.
Is this common, what causes it, how should I got about fixing it?

Brake fluid dissolves paint. If your master cylinder has had a leak or somebody spilt fluid sometime in the last 40 years, that would remove that paint.
That is my guess.
Remember if you didn't build it you can't call it yours.
