Thread: Dying canvas

    Default Dying canvas

Has anyone dyed or somehow changed the color of their canvas top? Always liked this M715 http://rides.webshots.com/photo/1094...Xq?vhost=rides

Canvas seems to of been darkened or I guess it could be custom. Any thoughts?

Canvac said that you could add automotive paint to their product to dye canvas. We had a thread a long time ago about that. I think the conclusion was that you just add enough paint to give it pigmentation. That canvas on the truck looks stock and just well perserved. Probably has sealer on it and also dirty. As canvas ages is picks up dirt and oils from skin and atmosphere and darkens naturally.

Absolutely true. Every time I put an "aged" top on and take one off, it makes a mess of a clean shirt and pants. The canvas really does hold a lot of dirt and grime. That top in the picture is the standard aftermarket color with a lot of dirt imbedded.

I have tried to dye my top twice and it didn't take both times. Canvac is more like paint than dye (just my opinion). I didn't like the results so I powerwashed it out. I think the dye and sealer used from the canvas manufacturer is pretty stout and prevents any other dyes from sticking. If someone else has had better luck I wish they would chime in. My top is old but in good shape. It is faded and could use some color.
