Thread: Removing a leaf from the springpack

Default Removing a leaf from the springpack

For those of you who have removed a leaf from your spring packs, which one did you remove? I thought I read that people usually remove the second from the bottom. That one has the straps that go up with the bolt across to help hold the spring pack together. So if I remove that leaf and put it all back together, will I have problems?

I recall hearing the first and third leaves in the pack. Haven't done it yet, but I heard it here.

well, I'm putting my springpacks back together today, so I guess I'm going with the second from the bottom. When I said "will I have a problem" in my first post, I meant will I have a problem with the 3 leaves on the bottom "wandering" or rotating out of line since I won't have those straps that go around the leaves.

    Yes, you probably will.

The "typical" removal is...starting from the shortest and calling it #1:

    #1, #3

Removing more than 2 leaves one wide open to axle wrap....

Taking out just #2 should help and might be a good way to go if you have a winch truck...little more weight up front to compensate for.

One could make a spring clamp out of a couple thick plates of steel and a few bolts or u-bolts...

Thanks everyone. I thought #1 and #3 would be a lot, considering I want more flex, but will be carrying a bit of load in the back, and a garwood winch up front. So I am just removing #2, and I was able to reuse the straps on #2 by putting them on #1. The graphite lubricant is looking really good so far. It stays on just like a paint, but it is very slick to the touch due to the graphite. Only thing stopping me from putting the front packs back on is that there are 2 different sizes of bushings, and I only got the right size for 1 of them. So as soon as I get a couple of the right size bushings, I can reinstall the packs and try them out. Yes, fisherman, I'll be trying them out as soon as possible, lol.

For your purpose, I think that is the correct strategy. Good to know the strap worked that way...much easier than making new ones.
