    Default PS Upgrade from Wagoneers

I was wondering what years Wagoneers have the power steering gear and pump that can be installed in our M715s? I have a few local u-pull it junkyards that have a few Wagoneers sitting in them.

I am running a stock 230 but feel that I can make a mount between the generator and the 12 volt Chevy alternator. The pump would run off the same belt as the 12 volt Chevy alternator.

I pulled my ps box and pump from a '79 J-10 - pitman arm bolted right up too.

The FSJ or at least the Wagoneer started life with a manual steering box that looks just like the one in the M38A1's. Behind the axle with the pitman arm shaft horizontal to the ground. They changed over to the saginaw power steering box that is the exact outside dimensions as the GM cars from the late '60's until they went to front wheel drive in the late '80's.

The FSJ boxes along with their pitman arms bolt right up to the M715. The GM car boxes still need the FSJ pitman arms.
Remember if you didn't build it you can't call it yours.

So basically ANY full size woody Wagoneers from the 1970's up until 1990 say will work - both the gear and pump?

The pump's no that important. If I remember right all these FSJ's used the GM pump anyway. I'll use the box from my J10(and maybe the hoses), but the pump I'll reuse from the Caddy motor so I have no bracket issues(might not with the J truck pump but I figure whoever buys that engine will like having it).

Even if you're using a Dodge or Ford mill their pump will still (probably) work just fine with the Jeep(GM sourced) box.

The main point of the matter is that no matter what pump you go with, you'll still have to fabricate the brackets.

One question I haven't really seen covered regarding this - when you do the Waggy/J-truck power steering box can you use the stock M-715 steering shaft or do you need to use the later Waggy/J-truck steering shaft?

Just wondering since I'm keeping my manual box for a while but was going to swap my shaft for Borgeson pieces and don't want to buy stuff twice.

Do you mean the shaft between the rag joint and the steering column? The M715 shaft should slip right onto your power box.

I used a '66 Impalla ps box on my M715. The input shaft didn't match up to the stock rag joint. I just took the rag joint apart and used the M715 side on the steering shaft and the Impalla side on the steering box. The only difference was the shaft diameter, the rag joint parts were all the same.

The important part is to get the FSJ pitman arm. Everything else pretty much bolts on or needs 5 minutes of thinking. Without the FSJ Pitman arm, you either have to build your own like I did or get one custom made.
Remember if you didn't build it you can't call it yours.
