Default Shifting to third gear and end up grinding reverse

Had my M715 out of the garage today for an early spring exercise session.
Seems like I have to relearn how to operate the truck every spring. LOL

If I grip the shifter knob too tightly with the palm of my hand, I miss 3rd and I end up going into the reverse slot, which really makes me mad at myself.
If I hold the shifter knob lightly with my fingers everything is fine, I go through the gears like I know what I'm doing.

Anyhow, hope everyone on here is doing fine.

I guess its okay to have a death grip on the steering wheel but you better be Cool Hand Luke on the shifter...at least you know!

Judging by the looks of my reverse gear on my T98 rebuild, this is a common problem.
