Default 68 M715 Tornado ~ Original setup, backfiring from exhaust and carburetor coughing

    Hello,
I have a 68 original Tornado in a 68 truck and looking for some advise. This setup was restored and reassembled here at our shop and since its been able to start and run, we've had issues making it run well.

Carburetor is done and new. Distributor is rebuilt, points set, coil tested ok. The rest of the engine was previously known to run "OK". My issue currently is the engine will idle fair, but any throttle input will cause it to run erratic and if you really push it, it will backfire out of the exhaust and even the carburetor (making some sweet fire).

I'm looking for ideas, seeing if anyone has combated these issues before. I appreciate the help,

    Thanks!
    Jason

Check the timing. That engine will run on just about any timing setting. People have reported conditions just like your and distributors 60° off. If that is correct, check the point gap and spring again.
Remember if you didn't build it you can't call it yours.

Any idea where #1 cylinder on the distributor is supposed to be? We're going to get inside the distributor soon and to some double checking.

    FIRING ORDER 1-5-3-6-2-4
Look under Vbulletin sign at the top and there are 4 tabs underneath. Hit the M715libary tab and you will find a ton of the manuals to keep your truck running.
    Come and take it

5 things needed to make an engine run. Spark, fuel, compression, timing and air. Sounds like you have a timing issue as the spark is firing off and it sounds like a valve is open to allow the flame to head each direction outside of the combustion chamber. When they are in good condition, those motors do alright. Put the timing mark on zero and check for cylinder compression with compressed air. If it does not have compression and you can hear the air in the carb and possibly the exhaust, rotate the engine one complete turn with the timing mark back on zero. You should now have compression. Set your distributor to number one and start it. Then set the timing to spec in the manual. I would get into the manuals like gonz said. That is the best tool in any tool box.

EDIT: While editing it looks like you found your issue. Thumbs up!

Thanks guys, the manual is super important. We did some testing and turned out to have a bad condenser! Now it runs right on. Thanks!
