5 things needed to make an engine run. Spark, fuel, compression, timing and air. Sounds like you have a timing issue as the spark is firing off and it sounds like a valve is open to allow the flame to head each direction outside of the combustion chamber. When they are in good condition, those motors do alright. Put the timing mark on zero and check for cylinder compression with compressed air. If it does not have compression and you can hear the air in the carb and possibly the exhaust, rotate the engine one complete turn with the timing mark back on zero. You should now have compression. Set your distributor to number one and start it. Then set the timing to spec in the manual. I would get into the manuals like gonz said. That is the best tool in any tool box.
