having trouble with shifting out of 4 wheel drive........any ideas???
The stock transfer case has an issue with binding if it is driven on pavement for a while in 4wd. The lack of the tires being able to slip in relation to each other gets the thing "wound up" and it doesn't like to shift out of 4wd after that.
Usually, driving in reverse for a bit "unwinds" the transfer case and then it will shift.
It is possible as well that something is wrong with the linkage...give it a looking over and make sure it is trying to move all the way back...possible there is rust/corrosion at the tcase if the thing has been sitting for years in 4wd that is preventing the linkage from moving things...but usually the binding is due to the "wind up" explained first.
I would look it over for any linkage problems, then drive in reverse, try to shift, repeat that several times if needed...if that doesnt do it...post back.

And in addition to the excellent advice above, try driving on grass or dirt when shifting. I remember having problems in Germany (1970) and it was simply dry pavement. Back up, etc. fixed it.
When I use my trucks in parades, I find that low gear works best which means having to run in 4 wheel drive. The ambulance always is difficult to shift back into 2 wheel and it usually takes letting it roll in reverse a few feet to take the pressure off. But my M715 which has lock-out hubs, has no problem shifting back since there is no pressure from the front wheels.
