    Default Diesel Engine Possibilities

Is it possible to fit a 4 or 6 cylinder diesel engine into the engine compartment for a M715? Plus, after that is done, is it possible to work out space issues to run that engine off of biodiesel/vegetable oil?

I am planning on putting a 12 valve Cummins 6BTA in my M715 this spring. I have read that it is a *very* tight fit but that it can be done. I may modify the firewall so I can push the motor back a little. Also, from what I have read, a 4BT will fit with minor effort. I plan to run WVO so I am going to have to come up with 2 tanks (small diesel and large WVO). I'll be interested to hear about your project. Hopefully, some of the members that have actually done diesel swaps will chime in.

Bob Cowen is working on one right now and he promised a bunch of pictures so Post 'em if you've got 'em Bob! We're all waiting to see!

you've got like a foot behind the firewall, just use it all and a 6bt should fit fine.

Yeah, the 6BT and 4BT swap have both been done a few times.

If I remember this right, and if I don't I'm sure someone will correct me, the 4BT fits super fine but the 6BT is a tad long and there are problems mounting a intercooler. No big deal if you can do without or have one of the older CTD that were not intercooled. I'm sure that with some cutting and messing around you could fit an FMIC in there, especially with all the companies making custom intercoolers out there at decent prices for the tuner crowd.

There's problems mounting it even w/out the intercooler. IT's a big motor. But kick that firewall back and it's all good.

Maybe I'll mock that up when it warms up a little, just to get some numbers out there.

I've spoken with the folks at: http://www.mseriesrebuild.com about fitting a 6bt into my 1980 Cherokee 2dr. They have done mesurements for another customer, and say it is possible and that there would be 2" of clearance left over in the engine compartment, split between the front and rear. So swapping in a 6bt is a very tight fit, but it is possible.

Here are the issues with a 6BT:

"barely" fits without cutting the firewall if at all. Fans and radiators come into the equation.

No real room for a Dodge take off front mounted intercooler.

Engine is 1200 pounds. The stock 230 is around 450 full of fluids. That is a tremendous difference. The springs can handle it, but unless you also upgrade to an open knuckle D60. The front axle won't last long off road.

That is the bad. The good:

You can make as much torque as your pocket book allows. Amazing engine with lots of parts around.

The 4BT is like the small block Chevy. It will fit just about anywhere. But, to make the power you need the intake mounted intercooler as a minimum and a front mounted one would really help. It is tough to fit a front mounted intercooler on these trucks without cutting up the front end.

The 4BT is a little over 800 pounds. Again, you better upgrade your axles if you plan to do much more than drive down dirt roads.

Lots of parts around for the 4BT as well.

Either engine really needs to have an overdrive transmision and 4.56 gears would really help if you plan to drive more than 50 mph.

I am not trying to convince you of either or neither. Just telling you what others have figured out. I have a 396 in mine and love it. But, a good friend has a '98 Cummins just sitting in his yard because he bought a '06. I could buy the entire running and driving NV4500 2wd truck for around 5k. This is the truck I pulled my M715 to the FE with last summer. I have been playing "what if?" in my mind for the last month over this drivetrain. I could make it fit the M715. It would slide into the M35 real good too.
Remember if you didn't build it you can't call it yours.
