Thread: 1967 vehicle horn issue, swapped with a '69 wheel

Default 1967 vehicle horn issue, swapped with a '69 wheel

I have a 1967 M715. The steering wheel was very poor, so I found a steering wheel from a 1969 Gladiator. I thought I could swap this 1969 wheel in. However, my horn is now not working from the horn button location. The '67 wheel had the eyelet with a spring, the '69 does not. Does a modification need to be made to have the '69 horn work? I saw a post here where another guy was doing the same swap, but he did not report any issue with the horn. Maybe my horn contact is bad, and the wheel swap should not be the issue?

Did the horn work before the wheel swap?

The stock wiring has +24v to the horn at all times and the -24v connection is made through the steering wheel button. Do you have continuity from the center of the steering wheel to ground? Then do you have continuity between the the wire and the steering wheel horn ring?

The horn was inconsistent . At times it would get stuck on, and I would have to disconnect.
I can ground the horn contact switch manually now and make the horn work with the 69 wheel installed. But if I hook up the horn contact as it is designed, the horn will not sound. It is as if the horn contact or the wheel is not grounded. Thanks for your help .

Have you checked the rag joint ground strip?
