    Default Tearing out reverse gear

    I have not yet driven a vehicle with the T98 transmission, so I have question.
    How does reverse get destroyed in these things?
    Is it easy to accidently shift into reverse while going for third gear?

    That would be my guess. I am guilty of doing that at times. It was especially difficult to shift my truck when I first got it until I got the "feel" of shifting. It had been over 40 years since I had driven an M715. One thing that really helped was to remove the water contaminated gear oil and replace it with NAPA 80W90 gear oil. It made a 500% improvement (if that is possible ).

    1ST and reverse arnt syncronized and you need to be completely stopped before you try to go into these gears, if you dont it grinds them up just like yours did. it also helps if you go into second gear before going to 1st or reverse "when stopped" remember these are old school gear boxes

    Yepper, that is the issue. Stop fully before shifting into first or reverse...and stopping the rotation in the trans by hittin second gear before shifting to first or reverse is exactly what to do...this stops the internals and then one can shift without harm...though sometimes, the first or reverse gear wont be perfectly lined up so you cant quite shift in when stopped...push the shifter into the hole where the first or reverse gear is till it just stops and then slowly let the clutch pedal out until the pressure on the stick gets the trans in gear...floor the clutch immediately...you can get good at this to the point where the truck basically doesnt move and the gears dont grind.

    This is off topic but what the heck, I really think that we get along well here.

    You can tell the guys who grew up with transmissions that were completely synchronized. And, you can tell the, shall we say, "Older" guys which includes myself. First and reverse not synchronized was what I grew up with so it was just a natural. However, my '07 Mustang GT is fully synchronized and I even think reverse gear is as well!!!

    Yeah, I am in the camp of the damage being done by jamming it into gear whilst it was moving. Remember ... these trucks were driven when new, by idiots like myself, 22 years old, didn't give a rat's arse because it didn't belong to me! That damage was probably done 45 years ago!

    Another thing.
    How many young adults drivng now a days, have seen the "three on the tree" column shift.
    My Daughters thought that I was making that up.

    Lol on the three on the tree...

    I had on old IH D-1100 PU, with the 345 motor and the three on a tree...

    Every now and then, it would "lock up" under the hood where the shift linkage was, and I would have to pull over.... manually "pop" it back into place... and shift more carefully continuing on down the road...

    Just a blast from the past...

    I sorta miss that Old truck...

    Drove it from Dallas to Washington DC, carrying everything I owned in it...

    All around the Capitol, Ft Belvior, Quantico, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia... for several Years,
    Then drove it back to Dallas... even more loaded down
    when I came back home.

    Never really had any problems.. other than resetting the points about once a month, and blew a brake drum once... and
    Dad had to find one here at a wrecking yard in Texas, over about 5 days...
    and Fed Ex it to me...

    Three on the Tree...

    I had some really good times during those Years and in That Truck

    Hell, it had its own hanger at Whiskey 28 ... Potomac Airfield, along with its brother "parts truck" and another complete engine as well...

    I used to run it up and down the runway late late late at night

    All 2200 feet of it ...lol...

    I can shift from 2nd to 3rd and overshoot 3rd gear and grind the reverse gear.

    So very, very true. My first car, a 1953 Plymouth had a three on the tree. My first new car, a 1969 Dodge Dart 4-door sedan, 273 CID had a three on the tree.

    My next new car was hard to find, a Subaru Forester 6-speed manual. The salesman looked at me as though I had two heads when I said I wanted a manual. I get it tomorrow.
