Thread: 6bta getrag 5 speed od

Default 6bta getrag 5 speed od

The aftercooled Cummins is about 3 inches taller than a intercooled one, so I had to do the spring over to clear the pumpkin and still close the hood. I did the rear shackle flip. My question is do I need to flip over the front shackle on the rear spring? That is a big project and I'm not sure it is needed? Just doing the rear did turn the pumpkin up a few degrees, but that is ok as I'll be pushing the t-case back about 6.5". Thoughts?

Next steps will be to build engine & trans mounts and push the t-case back. Cooling this beast will be the trick, even with removing the stock mounts the front is narrow and height limited. A stock dodge is too wide, what have others used, manual and no intercooled needed. Electric fans will be part of the configuration.

An intercooled 6BT does fit in a non-lifted truck. IIRC, I offset the engine about an inch and used a Chevy D60, which was probably my saving grace. I think the stock front axle has a more centered differential.

Coolingwise, you'll be surprised how little cooling these engines need. A stock radiator will be more than enough in most climates.

Yea even an inch to the drivers side will insure clearance, will see I have not lowered into place yet after doing the SOA today. Keeping stock axles for now 4.88 and open. I had a BBF390 and Clark 5 speed in it. Will list that on Denver CL.
If the stock rad will cool it that would be awesome. Will need new shocks any ideas on what ones fit with a SOA leaving stock mounts in place?

So the u joints need to be parallel. Rather than one at 7 and one at 3 dig? or twist the diff's to point straight at the tcase and run CV joints? But the axles move so they will never be perfect, tcace stays fixed. Catch 22.

Wow that is an awesome writeup! my issue is I'll need to do the calculations after I push the tcase back so will not be able to have the drive shafts in place, as one will be six inches short the other too long. Will pick the center of the yoke bolt as the consistent place.

6bta is sitting on the new mounts, I used second generation mounts. Almost done with moving the tcase back, then I can mount the trans. I think my driveline angles will be fine. What worries me is finding affordable 38" or so rubber. Why invest in 16" when 8 lug axles open up so many more options. Seams like everyone swaps in new axles. Anyone need a pair with 4.88's in them? Or know of some cucv's in Colorado?

HMMWV tires are dirt cheap and about 37". Just not as sticky as other civilian tires in that size.

As far as axle sources, besides craigslist, you can find good deals here: http://www.car-part.com
