Default Best Gasket Engine Rebuilding Set RS649G

I just received a complete Tornado 230 engine gasket and seal kit from Walck's 4WD for $260. Looks to be complete and includes both military and civvy timing case gaskets (look at the difference).

Here is the parts listing for Best Gasket kit RS649G

I've already got reinforced intake and exhaust gaskets that I plan to use instead of these fiber ones. Last time I spoke with Surplus City their kit was something crazy like $500.

Here are some of the gaskets available individually.

Is the head gasket correct for military? I think that they are different too.

    Default Wish I knew!

    Don,

I don't have the cylinder head off yet to compare, so I can't tell you for sure yet. Anyone else here know if the 230 head gasket differs from military to civilian?

The head gasket shown in the picture will fit both Military and Civilian. The "wings" or wedge shapes on the front of the head gasket are needed for the military application. Just cut them off for the civilian application.

Thank you for posting this info on the gasket set.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought that the civilian version was not the same as the military and could not be used. Good to know that the military style can be used for both.

    Great information, thanks guys.

BTW, I hope I NEVER need that engine set...

Yeah, if you try and put a civvy head gasket on your military 230, it'll fit up, but will shoot oil out of spaces where the triangles on the one end should be.

BTW, the civvy water pump gasket will not fit the military style. It is different.

I just scanned it, here it is>>>

This is excellent news, I need to reseal my front cover, It will be nice to have fresh gaskets instead of the 45 yo NOS.

    Default Good eye!

Good eye, Scott. The provided water pump gasket must be civvy:

    Thanks for the heads up.

I have a civvy water pump that Jon gave me once. We were going to decide if the bearing and shaft were the same as military or not.

The gasket in the kit would fit that civvy pump.

The civvy one is on the left. It appears that the impellor itself looks the same. I'd have to take them all apart to be sure, tho.

Just an aside, I was shown by an old time mechanic that you can substitute a gasket by using the solid cardboard found in things like cracker boxes, cereal boxes, etc. I used a dishwasher soapbox for my waterpump along with a moderate coating of mega-black gasket maker. May not be spec but it works.
