    Default stainless fuel tank

anyone ever made a new fuel tank for their M? i dropped mine(tank) to put in a new sender and there is a hole in the top of the tank from rust. the bottom of the tank is a bit beat up too. I work at a fab/ machine shop and can tig. i figured i would fix the hole in the stock tank for short term but take some dims and make up a stainless tank. maybe with extra capacity. bigger pickup line, and whatever bells and whistles i come up with. i happen to have plenty of ss sheet here on hand plus whatever i need from work. good idea?

here is my smaller tank, I took 3" off the bottom for a little more clearance I will be selling stock copies soon, just need time to build a few more Alum, I was advised for serious off-roading stainless may crack

Hmmm. Seems aluminum would be the one to crack, at the welds especially.

I originally wanted stainless and was talked out of it by a metallurgist they advised alum. due to less prone to cracking and more apt to dent then crack on impact. I personally think they both have pros and cons. when i mounted this tank a paded every contact point due to alum will wear thru quick.

My stainless tank will never get the abuse of off road action. I am more into it looking and driving like stock. And, I don't want any rust issues... At least not in the gas tank...

Nice job on the tank. The welds look straight and even. Outstanding job for sure.
